St Brigid's is a new Catholic Primary school serving the families of the local Catholic Parish of Nerang. St Brigid's offers a quality education within the context of Catholic values and traditions. The schools aims to be a true community of learning and faith - one which recognises the uniqueness and dignity of the individual and operates on the gospel values of respect and care for one another.
Through its curriculum and courses, its celebration and worship rituals, its cultivation of the aesthetics and its Religious Education programme, the school attempts to give witness to the essential wholeness of the human experience - social, moral, physical, spiritual and intellectual development.
School Development
STAGE ONE : A Pre-School, six classrooms and an administration block were established to cater for Pre-School to Year 4 in 1994 and to Year 5 in 1995.
STAGE TWO : Four more classrooms will cater for Pre-School to Year 6 in 1996 and to Year 7 in 1997.
STAGE THREE : A further four classrooms, an undercover area and a permanent library will be provided to enable the school to be fully operational from Pre-School to Year 7 from 1999.
Social/Moral Development
We accept that we live in an era in which community standards have been reduced, and our teenagers are going to be exposed to social pressures and choices which did not exist in other times. At St Brigid's we shall provide an eight year programme, from Pre-School to Year 7 which is designed to better equip our young people to confront social issues in the light of gospel teachings.
Physical Education
Current and future developments at St Brigid's take into account the physical development needs of students. An emphasis on skills development in the early years culminating in interaction with other schools are features of our physical education and sports programmes. The school has on on-site swimming pool and large grounds to allow expansive play and sports opportunities.
Spiritual Development
Faith development is considered an essential component for education of the whole person. The school's formal Religious Education Programme is based on the Archdiocesan Education in Faith Guidelines. Students participate regularly in liturgies, celebrations, prayer times and assemblies which help develop the community of faith.
Intellectual Development
St Brigid's has adopted the Queensland Education Department's Curriculum for Primary Schools and Catholic Education documents as the basis for all courses. There is a genuine attempt to meet the needs of all learners by providing a variety of learning opportunities and teaching strategies. There is an emphasis on the developmental skills and needs of individuals.
Parental Involvement
St Brigid's is committed to the concept of partnership between school and family to enhance the development of each individual child. Strong links have been established between school and home. Fortnightly newsletters keep parents abreast of school developments, the Parents and Friends' Association meets on the second Wednesday of each month, the School Community Forum meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month to provide a forum for parents on school and educational issues and to make recommendations to the principal on policy matters. As well parents are encouraged to be active in assisting in classroom activities.
Discipline
The role of the school is to provide an atmosphere which encourages respect for others and fosters healthy attitudes towards self-esteem. Our policy, therefore, is based on encouragement, affirmation and acceptance of the individual to enable our students to develop the capacity to take informed responsibility to their own lives. As Catholic Education is concerned with individual development, social justice and peace, there is no place for corporal punishment at St Brigid's. An effective school behaviour plan has been adopted after wide consultation with parents. St Brigid's is designated as a "violence free" school.
